The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, however it is still unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or reject?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest pretending the worst regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
