Our Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Position.

Initially, this work could seem closer to an arduous university quiz rather than the latest popular music project by a musician whose last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Divided across four different parts and sung in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, often through the lens of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, carried by the lush sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. The pure audacity alone renders the work of other artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, with full praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to fuse the past and the present, the stakes feel far greater on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What really raises this fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Much like the legendary artist during her height, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart apart, the listener still want to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly during a stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes in with comedic force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that the listener rarely quite know—or even want to predict—what it will go next."

Nearly each song finishes at a totally distinct place from how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a cut that recalls her previous rhythmic style begins out moody and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in English swells on a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. That feat is echoed by a different expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. This is a deep well of hidden gems that requires patience to completely mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at the table, some intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly inventive visionary.
