EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
