Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
